Today I am going to take on the role of "theater reviewer". My favorite role.
I am a theatre snob.
I am not afraid to admit it.
Some Girls is a play written by Neil Labute that was selected as a part of Western's main stage theatre repertoire this year directed by my professor, Rich Brown. The home of this show is in the underground theater in the PAC. This could not have been a more perfect setting. I am going to take quite a bit of time discussing the set of this play because it was incredible. The designer, J. Wiese, teamed up with Brown to create a box, literally, within the little theater that looked exactly like a hotel room. The walls were created by scrims so the actors could not see out but the audience could see in and it was set on a turn table and was rotated between scenes to give audience members a new perspective each time. The attention to detail was incredible. This kind of set design has never been done before and it was a beautiful first go at it. My complaints lie in the fact that I couldn't see everything. I missed a lot of facial reactions and complete visual for some moments. I am one that likes to see everything because I am a visual person so, I found this frustrated. However, that made the visible moments all the more meaningful. These blocks also caused some muffled text. I am glad that I had read the play before so I knew what was going on or else I would have missed a lot of the context of the play. The only change I would have really made would have been to make the bed smaller. Only one character is comfortable on the bed with guy and it takes up most of the room. The other three scenes had to be acted around it which made the actors appear constricted. The lack of physical movement was made up for in vocality. Labute is a dialog author. Most of his plays have incredible dialog with characters I don't care for. Some Girls is full of characters I enjoy, and consequently one of my favorite Neil Labute plays. Every actor in the cast captured the Labute dialog perfectly. Timing, emotion, turn-taking, overlap, dynamics, and stress fit the style to a T. It pleases me so to go to a University with so many talented individuals who can work with challenges to create a diverse group of characters in a 90ish minute play. The guy character is double cast. Because of this, I am going to see the show again next Friday. I look forward to see the different choices between Jason and Andy and how that affects the female performances by Shelby, Andrea, Laura, Francesca, and Rachael. This show is a very impressive collage performance and people at Western should take the time to not only support their talented peers but to see this dynamic piece of art.
The outfit of the day was created from with the dress being worn in its natural form with a Forever21 grey lace top worn over, paired with a Target brown cardigan, Frye boots, bracelets from Sundance, Nordstroms, and a boutique in Spain, and an owl necklace from Forever21.
This outfit was perfect for dinner and play hopping. The Snodgrass family came up to see my show. We went to dinner at Boundary Bay and ate our weight in deliciousness. After the Fantasticks, the five of us went to Mallard's for ice cream, for most of us at least. Tim didn't get real ice cream. Spicy cold cheese. That is what his selection essentially was.
